Deserve

Trayee was unable to sleep. She kept tossing and turning on the bed. The conversations kept running on her head. She finally decided to go. She quickly got up and dressed herself. The clock chimed. ’12 a.m.’ she thought. The time didn’t stop her. She hopped onto her bike and turned the ignition on. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were no longer as maddening as they used to be at college. She kept all her thoughts aside and drove away.

Trayee let out a deep sigh. The nameplate still hung there. ‘R&T’, it said. ‘All same. The apartment is still the same. Atleast the front is,’ Trayee thought. She rung the doorbell. It was immediately answered. Ryan opened the door. “Didn’t expect you awake,” Trayee said.

“Couldn’t sleep.” His voice was breaking.

She went down on her knees and said,”I am sorry. I know I was wrong at some places and you were wrong at others. But, our love was never less for each other, I know that. For your mistakes, I have forgiven you long ago. Can we start afresh now?”

Her eyes had tears and she clenched her jaw to not let them flow. ‘She was always the strong girl,’ he thought. He answered finally.

“No. We can’t start afresh. I have come to realise my mistakes. I have realised I somehow took too much of yourself from you. That is why, I think, that glitter in your eyes is absent, that smile has a very professional look. You deserve better. No, not anyone else, but you deserve a better me. I need to be a better person and you too need to rewind and think about your mistakes. It may take forever, but it will be worth it. We will know we love each other, but we will know that we are not ready. When we will be, we will know.”

She looked at him. Then spoke,”I deserve a hug atleast?” He hugged her and said,

“Bye, from the one, you did not deserve. Next time you will get a better me, more deserving me.”
